THE PROCESS MAKER
If you asked Professor Harald Klein about his first impressions of Singapore, he would spare no detail in telling you about the magnificent Marina Bay area which he vividly remembers from his brief first encounter. This same impression has seeped into his classroom, where the warm and engaging atmosphere with the students at TUM Asia has kept him coming back to teach year-after-year.
As professor in Plant & Process Engineering at the Technical University of Munich, Professor Klein is responsible for various teaching matters of the Chemical Engineering courses in both Munich, Germany and in Singapore. The aim, he says, is to not only equip students with theoretical knowledge, but equally as important is the ability to apply the knowledge. With this conviction, Professor Klein ensures that all Chemical Engineering students have the opportunity to complete real-time experiments on industrial-sized equipment in the laboratories.

THE COMMUNICATOR
As one of the world’s leading researchers in information theory and communications engineering, Professor Gerhard Kramer of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) understands the finer points behind communications infrastructure like no other. But communicating this knowledge to students, is a whole new set of skills that does not spill over from his area of expertise, he says.
Professor Kramer still finds that one of the greatest challenges as an educator is in cracking the code to tutor a variety of students with various learning capabilities in one single class setting. While he hopes to be able to solve complex issues in the world of communications engineering during his lifetime, he understands his first task is always to pass on his knowledge and passion of his field to his young pupils.

THE CHIPS LOVER
As the Chair of Integrated Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Professor Herkersdorf believes that his role as an educator is to prepare a generation of engineers with the necessary knowledge and practical know-how to create better technology. Form must follow function, he says. Additional to his motto, Professor Herkersdorf speaks passionately about the need to understand globalization. The world is changing, and we must keep up.
For him, globalization is most obvious when he flies to Singapore for a two-week teaching module. Keeping true to the university’s style of teaching, the material is adapted to Asian relevance. The engagement in a small class of thirty graduate students keeps the classroom brimming with interaction. We have to future-proof them, he says. The reality of today’s rapidly changing economy is that this generation will face problems that are currently unknown, yet educators have to prepare the pupils to tackle the issues.
The Technical University of Munich, or TUM for short, is one of Germany’s top universities and among Europe’s elite higher institutions. TUM operates TUM Asia, the only branch campus of the university, in Singapore since 2002. TUM Asia offers Bachelor and Master degrees by TUM, in partnership with top universities in Singapore.
